FROS-T Athletic Cooling Shirts Keep You 10 to 20 Degrees Cooler

Update 1/10/15: Per a note from a visitor, looks like Fros-T is no more.

If you’re looking for cool, lightweight daily-wear undershirts, check out my Thin Cool Undershirts article.
For more technical cooling shirts/vest, check out my Hi-Tech Cooling Shirts article for more options.

Fros-T Athletic Cooling Shirt – Stay 10 to 20 degrees cooler

I guess today is the day of high-tech devices, so let’s take a look at a newer, lightweight athletic cooling shirt line that will keep you really cool in those hot situations.

Before we get into the product specifics, one application I thought these light weight “under” shirts might be good for was the law enforcement.

I’m not sure if this type of product would get sanctioned by the governing body that oversees what is approved apparel for police or firefighters, but one complaint I constantly hear from police officers is how hot and wet their undershirts get while wearing kevlar body armor.

Since there is no airflow between the undershirt and kevlar vest, any shirt they wear stays wet and uncomfortable – and it appears to be a pretty common (and solutionless) complaint .

Anyway, if there are any folks in the law enforcement out there that are either willing to comment below or possibly try one of these undershirts out and write me back with your findings, I’d love to hear from you.

Maybe I can try one out too and report back.

Company Information

FROS-T Sports (site offline, ), a venture/start-up based in Florida, has created a light-weight, form fitting, 4-way stretch athletic shirt and bra line that contain integrated cooling polymer discs distributed on the chest and back.

When activated, the technology in the polyvinyl alcohol synthetic discs are said to keep you 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature.

Here’s an excerpt from the company’s website (site offline, ):

FROS-T Sports, Inc. manufacture’s today’s Premier Advance Cooling Technology on apparel for all Athletes, Industrial workers and individuals with Heat Related symptoms i.e.; MS

The product is intended to help prevent Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion.

The shirt is designed to cool the body core temperature to allow muscle support for optimum strength, endurance while maximizing mobility and comfort.

Products

  1. FROS-T Sports Performance Cooling Short Sleeve Shirt ($44.95, l)
  2. FROS-T Sports Performance Cooling Sleeveless Shirt ($44.95, l)
  3. FROS-T Sports Performance Cooling Bra ($34.95, l)
  4. Youth versions of the Sleeve and Sleeveless Shirts are also available ($34.95)

How Does the Technology Work?

Polyvinyl Alcohol is a state-of-the-art synthetic material known for its “water loving” properties combined with an innovative design that creates an ultra-absorbent, drip-free process.

Made from a water soluble and biodegradable material, the hi-tech polymer retains water while remaining dry to the touch.

When wet, the PVA Chill Gear Material becomes about 10 to 20 degrees cooler than the existing air temperature.

This provides a cooling effect for the user.

When the material is no longer cool, usually 30 to 120 minutes, simply re-wet and the Polyvinyl Alcohol will begin to cool again.

Update (5/10/11) – Check the comments below. I did hear back from the company COO and we just might have found a shirt that will work under kevlar.

    • heya scott. i just had an email exchange with victor from fros-t. he said they were about 60/90 days away from offering their items. not sure why their website is no longer active.

drop them a line at [email protected] and see if you can get in touch with someone. the email i sent victor did not bounce, so i’m guessing their mail service is still active (hopefully).

let me know if you can’t get in contact with them via that email.

  4. Victor – I read that you solved this issue for our law enforcement wearing their kevlar vests. My husband works in a Steel Mill – next to molten steel – extremely hot conditions. Not much air flow & always were protective suits, similar to firefighter’s. Would any of your products work for him?

check out this fros-t update article i just posted. looks like the company will be starting production in about 30-45 days, and hopefully their new/latest line will offer cooling effects in low air-flow wearing situations, such as the one your husband is in with working at a Steel Mill.

    • hey bob, it is my understanding that the fros-t undershirt needs airflow to be fully effective. i noticed this when i tried out my original fros-t. when i wore it under a couple layers of clothing, i didn’t experience the cooling effects as much.

but, when i wore it in a situation where air flowed through the shirt some, the cooling effects were pretty pronounced. i’m not sure how much the fros-t technology has evolved so you may want to check with the company to see if their newer products will work in your situation.

you might want to stay close to my site here, and subscribe to my mailing list or my rss feed. there is a company working on a technical undershirt/t-shirt product specifically designed for your use case. i can’t say much more, but once the product is ready for prime-time, i’ll be announcing it here.

  7. Hey Victor,
My friend at a camp I go to had a fros-t towel, and it really helped to cool us down after a hot day out in the sun! Do you sell these? If so, I would love to buy one! Thanks!

  8. hey victor, got a quick question for you. let me first say, the fros-t is a very nice looking active-wear muscle shirt. i put it on and while i normally don’t think muscle shirts look good on me, the fros-t did. overall, a very nicely designed top.

so i was at 24 hour fitness earlier today and decided to wear my fros-t to the gym. before i went, i wet all the discs thoroughly and put on the fros-t as my base layer.

then like i normally do, i wore a few other layers on top of it including my ardyss abdomen compression tank, my posture shirt from evidence based apparel, then a t-shirt.

when i was working out, i really didn’t notice any cooling effects. it felt about the same as when i wear any other tops.

but, after i got home, i peeled off all the layers and was left wearing the fros-t. just coincidentally i was standing in front of the fan and it was when the air from the fan hit the shirt, i noticed the cooling.

so, the question is, does the fros-t have to be worn by itself with some kind of wind/air flow hitting it to be effective?

this is key, because i would assume many people coming here would wonder if they can wear the fros-t as a real-live undershirt to stay cool.

as you know, i have the first generation version, so let me know if that is just a characteristic of that version.

    thanks!

    • Undershirt Guy Thanks for your info and trying the shirt…your question: does the fros-t have to be worn by
itself with some kind of wind/air flow hitting it to be effective? The anserw is Yes by you putting on other shirts on top does not a loud the heat to escape and letting the PVA keep you cool… The shirts was design for athletes at the time who are constant moving. The PVA disc when wet are normally 10/15 degrees cooler than the air temp around you and when you start to do what ever activity your doing it will take the hot air around your body making it cooler. The next shirt that we been working won’t need that much air movement but some will make it much more cooler… Think of jumping out of a pool and getting hit with a small breeze… If you read on my site the technology part it can help you understand more how it works. Once again Thanks for you info… like I tell everyone Good or Bad info is Good….. Once new shirt is ready for production I will send you one, in the mean time B-COOL!!!

  9. most likely against his skin and along with that collar he’s got. It’s working, but ANYTHING to keep him any degree cooler is welcome!

    Reply
    • hey tcr, i’ve only had the chance to test out my fros-t at the gym one time, but i did not wear it directly on my skin. for the first test, i wet the cooling discs and put the fros-t over a compression top i wore as my base layer.

i wanted to see if i could feel the cooling effects through the compression top. i did feel cool, but i could not determine if it was because the shirt was semi-wet or if the discs were doing their thing.

my next test will be to properly wear the fros-t again my skin. also, victor and i have been exchanging emails and he said they will be sending over one of their new ones too!

so, i’ll keep everyone posted via the comments here on this article.

  16. my husband works at an oil refinery and it gets VERY hot there and stays hot. He had heat stroke last fall and really needs something that is going to keep him cool enough to work w/o another hospital trip. My guess is he is still going to sweat even wearing this, so is the sweat going to be enough moisture to re-activate the shirt? Or is he going to have to have a dozen or more shirts just to get thru one day at work?

  18. okay how come when i go to the webstie sometimes in a non regular way it say future home of something cool shouldnt you already be home if you are selling how can anyone trust you i sent an email like a month ago and no response what if you are just giving undershirt guy a free shirt which i bet he still hasn’t got yet to make people think you are reliable but you aren’t

    Reply
    • hey james, from the sounds of it, the company is going through a transition, so i’m not going to pass judgment yet. i did have to email the company twice to get a response, but the coo has been posting here and has provided a reasonable explanation on where the company stands.

full disclosure: yes, the company has offered up a complementary shirt for me to try out and you’re right, i have not yet received it. i did first ask about buying one though.

all that said, if a company is in business and is not responding to emails and not processing orders on a timely basis, that is simply bad business. i would prefer seeing a website with a visible announcement stating that they are temporarily holding operations while they transition to a new facility.

we’ll see how it goes. i will post further updates here.

      Reply
      • Undershirt Guy, your absolutely correct, I am not sure who you sent your emails to, but the distibutors I had at the time probably did not respond cause they were not selling the shirts any more. And if they had any available they were aloud to keep selling on there websites or locally until they finish their inventory. Yes I did promise you a shirt and Yes I have not mailed your’s yet because I have been in meetings with all new Production Company, Facility, New Mangement and trying to get the day to day operations going forward for what is coming to a store near you. I will say it here, I apoligized for not shipping your shirt, I have nothing to hide. I do appreciate you patience and your Understanding. For the last 2 yrs I have been a 1 man company and that is changing weekly. Your name and site came up in one of our meetings and we feel that your site and the others we are working with can take this and make it go viral. Regarding the website it is been change dramatically from what you see today, But I will not shut or change anything yet until we are ready to launch the new site. Like I said to James I am not here to please him But I will please the Millions of buyers that this company will have soon… Thanks for understanding and STAY COOL!!!

      • hey victor, as always, I appreciate your prompt responses to comments here.

it’s always tough to hear criticism/negative comments from customers, but hopefully their voices help the greater good.

hopefully you’ll get through the growing transitions then everyone can enjoy fros-t cooling shirts soon.

        thanks again.

    • James, I did not invent this product just to please you, we started selling in 2009 localy Tampa, Fl and via the internet, we have sold several thousands shirts. Now wether you buy one or not its not going to make or break this company. We are in the process of moving our facility to a larger capicty production cause we are in the position to be in Big Box Sports stores, Medical Stores and Safety Store either this summer or next spring. Then if you want one you can walk into them and buy one.

      Reply
  19. That makes sense. If they were only selling locally, then their website is to maintain basic info. I don’t blame James for wanting validity…law enforcement or not. I’m going to wait to order until I hear more too.

    Reply
    • well if they launched in 2008, that is still a relatively young company. i received an email yesterday from another company representative stating they were moving operations to a new facility in miami. i am not sure if that is affecting their responsiveness, though.

even though the company has been a little slow to respond to inquiries, i can look past that if:
      1. regular website orders are fulfilled in the time the company states
      2. the product performs based on the company’s claims

so, if you decide to order via their website, just keep me posted on what happens!

    • James, I am here to answer some of your questions:

To be a legit business you do not have to be part of BBB, several fortune 500 are not part of them. FROS-T Sports, Inc started back in 2008 as a idea and concept. The company was incorp on Oct. 2008 after several prototypes and designs. We started selling via the web and here locally in Tampa, Florida in March 2009. We are now operating under the new company FROS-T Cooling Apparel,LLC due to the demand of the technology for other uses other than Sports. We are in the process of moving our Tampa facility to Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Coming out this summer will be new designs, new styles for men and woman in all Heat affective aactivities. The current web site will be redesing. Currently we are only selling what is left in stock while the new products and the completions of the new company is completed in a month or two. If YOU have any doubts or questions, by all means feel free to call me @ 904-993-4026 or email me @ [email protected] Thanks Victor STAY COOL!!!

  23. im interested in buying a Fros-t Shirt but is the company legit? did they ever respond to your email? I sent an email also but they haven’t sent me anything. Is there anywhere else that sells those products i am specifically talking about the sleeveless adult shirt. Well my main question is Is the Fros-t Sports, inc. trustable, reliable, legit, and not going to take my credit card and personal information? Thank you i would hope they are. Are there any very similar items that you know of yet?

    • hey james, i’m checking with the fros-t company again to see if they respond, but they have not responded to the inquiry i sent last week yet. i will surely keep you posted.

in the meantime, you might want to check out http://www.physicool.co.uk/physicool-teeshirt.html. the company just launched their own cooling shirt, and i’ll be posting an article about it soon. it’s not exactly the same as the technology used in fros-t, but the cooling principle is very similar. i have been in touch with the company and they have been actively responding to my email inquiries.

    • hey james, really good news here!

you probably saw this, but the owner and coo of fros-t (victor) posted a comment below confirming they were indeed currently offering the fros-t for sale on their website.

i did hear from him via email too and he confirmed the existing fros-t shirt did work, but for officers they were doing some additional testing due to lack of air flow under the kevlar vest.

additional good news here is that victor confirmed they have a shirt currently in research and development that is specifically made for lower air flow use cases, such as in wearing under kevlar. so hopefully some time in the coming months, we’ll see a fros-t made special for law enforcement!

i plan to pick one of these up in the coming weeks so i can give it a test drive.

if you wind up buying one too, please be sure to come back here after you’ve had a chance to try it out and let us know what you think!

thanks again for stopping by and posting your question.

  24. I constantly struggle with skin irritation due to sweat and no airflow through my shirt. I am a police officer in Jacksonville Florida, the heat in the south combined with my required vest makes a tough day. I get milieria ruba also known as prickly heat. I’ve been searching for the perfect shirt that won’t hold the sweat and keep me cool. The problem is lack of airflow due to the tight vest, maybe this will work. We are required to wear black, that is the only thing, do they come in that color? Thanks

    • hey sean, thanks for posting your comments. as far as i know, the fros-t cooling shirts only come in the color shown, but there is no harm in contacting the company directly and asking if they offer an all black color option. i tried emailing the company, but i have not yet heard back from anyone.

i’m also looking into a couple other cooling products such as:
      http://www.physicool.co.uk/physicool-teeshirt.html
      http://www.coolshirt.net/

but i don’t see that they offer all black color either.

stay tuned because i am also looking at some other cooling options too. will be back to you with my findings as soon as i have something to share!
