Need to Find A Holiday Gift? Think Undershirts! 43% of Americans in need of an Underwear Overhaul

Ladies, are you looking for ideas on what to get your man for the upcoming holidays? Guys, are you out shopping for your S.O. and wondering what present you can get for yourself? Consider getting some new undershirts (or underwear)!

A new survey from my friends over at Jockey International reveals some pretty interesting intel on the state of America’s underwear.

43% of Americans report that they personally need an “underwear overhaul”
21% think their significant other needs new skivvies

According to a previous Jockey survey

more than a quarter of Americans own underwear five or more years old
79% have underwear that is tattered, discolored or stained
32% of Americans refuse to throw away their old, tattered underwear until they receive new, replacement pairs

I Love You, But… – Lovers are next in line for an underwear makeover. About one in five (21%) Americans say their significant other is the person on their gift list most in need of fresh replacements for their underwear collection; 16 percent think their children could use an underwear makeover; and 6 percent think their mom or dad would benefit from a few new pair.
Motivation to not be Mortified – In the meantime, drawers across America are filled with underwear desperate to be discarded. But what encourages us to finally ditch our britches? Over half (55%) would toss their underwear if it was a pair they would be embarrassed to be seen in, while over two in five (41%) would throw them away if they didn’t fit.

Wondering what type of Undershirt to buy? Here are some tips to consider when trying to pick out undershirts:

If you’re buying for yourself, you already have a pretty good idea of what type of undershirts you normally buy. If you typically don’t spend very much on undershirts, give yourself a treat, forget about the price, and try buying something different. There are TONS of undershirt options out there, so kick back, spend some time here on the site and look for the features that are most important to you (lightweight or thick, high collar or regular, fitted or not fitted, cotton or blend, long or short)
If you’re buying for someone else, check out their underwear drawer and find out what kind of undershirt he wears the most. What’s the brand? Size? Style (crew neck, v-neck, tank top)? Type of fabric? Any other specific characteristics? If you can’t find an exact match, you’ll have all the info you need to find something similar.
Does your loved-one ever complain about his undershirts? While most guys won’t say anything about what bugs them about their existing undershirts, some might. Keep an ear out for key phrases like; “they’re too thick”, “they come untucked too easily”, “they bunch up”, “they’re too hot”, “they just don’t fit right!!”, “they’re uncomfortable”. If you hear any of those key phrases, you know it’s time to give them something new.
Although most guys don’t say anything, the biggest problems they face with undershirts (whether they admit it or not) are below. Try to figure out exactly which of the below problems your male friend/loved-one is experiencing and locate a suitable replacement.
1. undershirts come untucked too easily
2. they bunch up
3. they don’t fit right or aren’t as comfortable after washing them for the first time
4. they don’t fit properly in the shoulders, arms, torso, or midsection
5. they’re either way too thin, too thick, or the fabric is uncomfortable
Make sure you find the right size. One way to do that is check out the sizes of his existing undershirt. If that’s not easy enough to do discretely, try checking out his regular shirts. If he wears a large in a regular shirt, he’s probably a large in an undershirt.
Because most all undershirts are made differently, a large in one undershirt style/brand could be the same as medium in another undershirt. When picking out a new undershirt, my rule of thumb is to always pick one size smaller if the undershirt is made out of a stretchy material, and buy my normal size if the fabric is less forgiving.
