Undershirt Style: The Proper Undershirt
I can’t completely tell if this video is primarily an advertisement for Walmart, but my friend Craig from Style Minute makes some good points in his first episode in the “Finishings” series.
In the video he points out that the biggest mistake guys make when finishing their look is the type of undershirt they wear. Either the white undershirt is now slightly discolored (yellowish), the collar is no longer keeping its shape or is worn out, it’s too thick or too thin.
He goes on to recommend a few different brands of affordable undershirts including Life (Jockey brand undershirts specifically made for Walmart), Puritan, or even Merona brand undershirts from Target.
Not taking away from any of those undershirts, but it really doesn’t matter what brand of undershirt you wear, as long as it fits you properly, looks clean, crisp and fresh, doesn’t have worn out or saggy collar, and most importantly is comfortable. That said, I’ll have to visit Walmart and check out those Life brand undershirts!
Hey Walmart, where’s the love for Tug?

The Great (and dumb) Undershirt Debate

I have now tried the large, medium, and small sizesof the Merona Ultimate Crew-Neck T-Shirt. I am 6′2″ and like a shorter sleeve, mainly for polo shirts. Unlike Craig in the video above, the sleeves on my polo shirts rarely go below mid bicep.
The small size Merona Ultimate Crew-Neck T-Shirt is my favorite undershirt right now. It fits snug all over, sleeves go down only about a 1/3 of may upper arm, and the length is very good, down about mid glute.
I like the feel of the shirt, 95% cotton, 5% lycra. I have yet to wash this shirt, but the large shrunk up in length about an inch at most. I generally hang these shirt dry, and put in a low heat dry session for a few minutes to lessen the wrinkles.
TUG I would be interested in knowing your thoughts on these shirts. At $9 for 2 shirts, these are a great bargain.
Thanks
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your experience with the Merona Ultimate crew neck undershirts!

Can’t say I have any personal experiences with their undershirts, although I have worn other undershirts/underwear made out of 95% cotton, 5% lycra/spandex and have to agree about the comfort of that particular fabric blend.

I just checked Target.com for those Merona undershirts and they show that they are on Clearance for $4.99 for a package of 2. Hmmm, looks like Target is not going to carry them very much longer if they are on clearance.

Also, one other observation that has really bothered me for some time. Why do manufacturers call their undershirts “t-shirts”. I mean really, we know Hanes sells undershirts so why do they market them as t-shirts? Guess that’s something I’ll have to look into and write about sometime soon.
