Ask Tug: Black Undershirt Recommendation

The questions keep pouring in! Keep’em coming folks :)

I work in a field that requires me to wear a black undershirt. I’m looking for a black undershirt, crewneck, no pockets or anything. I need it long enough so that it stays tucked in, and doesn’t untuck later and look all puffy under my uniform shirt. I’m 6′1″ and i’m having trouble finding black ones that are long enough. What do you recommend?

Thanks for your email and your question!

I’d recommend one of four undershirts:

  1. TommyJohn Undershirts – They make a nice soft, stretchy, long black undershirt that is tailored and designed to stay tucked in. I’ve personally reviewed this undershirt on my blog and feel it’s a pretty nice shirt overall. I’m roughly 5’9” and the large shirt was very long (a little too big on me), but depending on your build, it may fit you well. If you’re on the thinner side, it may be a little big in the shoulder area on you, but I feel very comfortable in saying that it will stay tucked in. The medium on me fit better, although it was still a bit big, so again, depending on your build, that size may work for you.
  2. Calvin Klein Flexible Fit - I reviewed one of these not too long ago and liked it overall. My main issue with the shirt was that it was slightly warmer than other shirts, but if you’re someone who doesn’t get overly warm, it might be worth considering. The shirt is extremely comfortable and has enough length to stay tucked in. It’s made of a nice cotton / xla lastol blend that makes the shirt more on the stretchy side. It’s got a great feel to it and you should be able to try out a size smaller than you usually wear because the fabric is very forgiving.
  3. RibbedTee – They make a soft, comfortable ribbed undershirt that comes in both crewneck and v-neck. For more slender builds, they offer their Classic Fit undershirt. For men with standard to larger builds, they offer an Enhanced Fit version. Details are on their website. Since their undershirts are form fitting and a bit longer than most, they won’t look puffy under your uniform shirt and will tend to stay tucked in better. They also have an extra long version.
  4. You may also want to try out the Jockey Crewneck Shirt from Casual Male XL – they offer a Large, Tall crewneck undershirt that comes in black. I don’t know exactly how long it is, but I assume it’s longer since it’s a special “tall” size option. My only concern for you in choosing this shirt, is that depending on your build, it may be too big in other areas such as the torso, chest and waist and may bunch up. Just something to consider.
  5. Guy Laroche T-Shirt. 100% combed cotton ribbed fabric. Comes in a tall option. They also offer a pretty nice black tank top as well.

10/07/08 Update: We’re getting a lot of questions from readers about black undershirts, so I’m going to re-promote this article (originally posted on July 11, 2008). Adding to the list above, here’s a list of other companies that offer standard length black undershirts:

  1. Boss Orange Label Crewneck undershirt
  2. Execwear Nylon/Lycra Crewneck undershirt
  3. Zimmerli – Silk DeLuxe & Winter Silk undershirts
  4. Wickers Undershirts
  5. Hanes Undershirts
  6. Fruit of the Loom
  7. 2xist
  8. Calvin Klein

Let me know if you wind up trying one of these shirts and what you think of it. I’m sure my other readers have the same issue and would love to hear from someone who’s found an undershirt that works for them.

Thanks for reading!

Hey, I’ve just recieved my order from ribbedtee.com. They come in black and white. I ordered mine in crew-neck in the enhanced size because I have broader shoulders. They fit really good, they stay close to the body, don’t bunch up and are plenty long. The arms stay close to the body and don’t stick out past your outer short=sleeved shirt. Just like they say, they fit and feel like a under-tank shirt but have the coverage and protection of a t-shirt.
